With dental pain, we find patients are often unsure if they should wait for Monday morning or call the emergency line immediately. We consider a "Dental Emergency" as any situation involving uncontrollable bleeding, severe pain, or trauma to the facial bones/teeth that requires immediate intervention to save a tooth or stop an infection.

Trauma & Impact Injuries

  • If a permanent tooth is knocked out. There is a short window in which we can professionally re-implant and save the living root.

  • Go to the ER immediately If you suspect that the tooth loss is accompanied by a broken jaw, or severe facial trauma, or if you can't control bleeding.

Severe Pain & Infection

  • Call us for swelling localized to the gums or cheek. We can provide targeted antibiotics or emergency drainage to stop the infection at the tooth.

  • Go to the ER if Swelling moves under the jaw or eye, or causes difficulty breathing or swallowing. These are signs of a life-threatening infection.

Uncontrolled Bleeding

  • Call us if Post-operative bleeding persists after 30 minutes of firm pressure. We have special materials (Gelfoam/sutures) to stop bleeding at the source.

  • Go to the ER immediately if bleeding is pulsing, you feel faint, or have a known bleeding disorder

Dental First Aid

Click on the medical emergency cards below to learn about how to administer First Aid in the instance of a dental injury.

As has been my experience since I started with South River Dental, my visit was awesome! My latest visit was both unexpected & urgent. Ms. Brenda got me scheduled quickly and Dr. Potter and his team took great care of my Oral Health needs!

I had what amounted to a dental emergency while hiking through the area and they were able to get me in and get my tooth fixed. As well as being so kind and friendly in the process, they were very gentle and it really was painless.
